Sample Ethnography

The sample ethnography I read was written by Susan Orlean called “The American Male at Age Ten”. Ethnography is defined as the study and systematic recording of human cultures that can be made into a descriptive work produced from such research. For her ethnography, Susan observed a ten-year-old male named Colin Duffy and in turn observing the subculture of ten-year-old males. She observes every aspect of Colin’s life, what he looks like, his family life, where he lives, his school life, his interests and his social interactions. She describes Colin as always wearing a baseball cap, he has several, but “favors the Michigan Wolverines model because of its “pleasing colors”. She observes Colin at the Montclair cooperative elementary school as well as the other students in his class. She observes how the boys call the girls not by their names but by names such as Cortnerd, Terror, Spacey, Lizard, Maggot, and diarrhea.  She accompanies Colin and his best friend Japeth to Danny’s pizzeria where they like to go to play Street fighter II champion edition. At Danny’s, you will find pizza, candy, Nintendo, and very few girls. To a ten-year-old boy, it is the most beautiful place in the world. She discovers that even in the world of videos boys still don’t like the girls. When asking Colin if he would be Chun Li he pauses and says “I’d rather be Ken”. His room sounds like a typical ten-year-old boys room. “He has a cage with his pet parakeet Dude, on his dresser a lot of recently worn clothing piled haphazardly on the floor and a husky brown teddy bear sitting upright in a chair near the foot of his bed. The walls are mostly bare, except for a Spiderman poster and a few ads cut out of magazines he has thumbtacked up. One of the ads is for a cologne, illustrated with several small photographs of cowboy hats; another, a feverish portrait of a woman on a horse, is an ad for blue jeans.” She says these inspire him sometimes when he lies in bed and makes plans for the move to Wyoming. She mentions his dream of majoring in Law Enforcement and one day working for the FBI.  She ends this with him showing her how he makes spider webs in his backyard. He uses his father’s fishing line because it is clear and that makes it invisible and better if he is trying to trap someone. What says ten-year-old male better than a prank.
